Earlier this week, Facebook announced that it was paying $1,000,000,000 for Instagram, an 18-month old company with twelve employees and no revenues that allows people to share photos with each other.
Yes, $1 billion. And yes, I started second guessing my career choice when I heard the news.
I won’t comment on the merits of this acquisition (you can find plenty of opinions online), but it re-enforces the prevailing opinion that many supply chain executives have about social media, particularly those who work at companies that actually make and sell things: that social media is mainly a tool for marketing and advertising, with little or no use for supply chain processes.
